As long as civilisation continues, we can rest assured that technology will improve with time. Electronics, specifically, will only become lighter in weight, faster in speed and cheaper to buy and manufacture. Even with these advancements, however, there may not be improvements made for how to find valid information about these devices. Here are a few questions about HDTVs that are commonly met with incorrect information.
How do high-definition televisions work? There are two things that should be brought to attention: the transmission process and the technology of the HDTV itself.
Prior to high-definition television, radio waves were used to send signals. With radio waves, it was easy for the transmission to vary, altering the quality of the resulting pictures. HDTV uses digital transmission, which gives the viewer sharp and clear imagery.
An image's clarity can be measured by the television's frames per second and the amount of scan lines it has. For example, if you see a HDTV that has 720p resolution, it means it has 720 scanning lines with progressive scan technology. The higher the scan line count, the greater the resolution. Currently, 1080p is the best on the market, but there have been superior HDTVs constructed — 2160p and 4320p have been made before, but are unavailable to consumers.
How much do HDTVs cost? The price of a HDTV is mainly determined by its capabilities in resolution and maximum frame rate. A high-definition television that is 1080p will cost more money than 720p or 1080i. For the best resolution possible, you will want a HDTV with 1920 x 1080p.
If you want an actual number range, then that will depend on brand name, screen size of the television and resolution. The cheapest can be had for just over £100 from places like Tesco, but in terms of much better quality expect to pay a lot more. For the better and larger HDTVs, at the top of end of the market you can end up shelling out £1,500.
Do HDTVs need special equipment or cables for surround sound? This assumes that the programme being watched was made for surround sound audio. In that case, you will need either a coaxial digital jack or an optical digital jack to connect the speakers with your satellite receiver or cable box. S-video cables, composite cables or ordinary coaxial cables won't be sufficient for surround sound.
Although these are just a few of the common questions, the answers should help you gain more knowledge of what you're potentially purchasing.
