If you get annoyed with wires running from the front to the back of your room then these are ideal, and should complement your TV nicely. Please remember though that it is normally only the rear speakers which are wireless, and they still need to be plugged into the mains, so-called “truly wireless” home cinema doesn’t yet exist. Questions and Answers

What exactly is surround sound? The term is usually used in connection with home theatre systems. It refers to a method for arranging speakers in a room so as to make viewers feel as if they are the centre of the action. Most have a minimum of 5 satellite speakers and one subwoofer. Some have six or even seven speakers.

What is a wireless surround sound system? It is one in which the speakers are connected to each other wirelessly. In many cases though, only the rear speakers are truly wireless. The front speakers typically are often connected to each other via wires and each one still requires wires to plug into the power outlet. The biggest benefit is that it eliminates the need for running long cables from the front to the back of the room.

How does a wireless surround system work? They use infrared light emissions or FM radio waves to receive sound signals. The speakers require a transmitter to pick up signals from the stereo system or other audio device and send it to them. A sound amplifier that is usually integrated then converts the signal to sound.

How good is the sound quality? Wireless speakers can deliver the same high-fidelity sound as conventional wired ones. However, they operate at the 900 Mhz radio wave range which is also the same range used by home appliances such as microwaves and cordless phones. As a result they are sometimes prone to interference from other devices, especially cheaper ones. Higher end systems can often be configured to ignore such interferences.

How much do they cost? The purchase price of wireless sound systems can vary widely depending on brand and available features. Several inexpensive low-end systems are available for less than £50. Midrange systems can cost between £75 and £150 while higher end system typically start at around £200. The trick is to always shop around as their can be a big range from different retailers.
